About the CSCS Health & Safety Test
The CSCS (Construction Skills Certification Scheme) Health, Safety and Environment (HS&E) test is required to get a CSCS card - the standard proof of health and safety knowledge for construction workers in the UK. Administered through Pearson VUE on behalf of CITB, the test is multiple-choice and computer-based.
Questions cover legal duties under UK Health and Safety Executive (HSE) regulations, hazards on construction sites, personal protective equipment, manual handling, working at height, and emergency procedures. This reviewer focuses on the operative-level test (the most common card type), but the underlying hazard-and-control content also applies to the manager and specialist tests.
What this practice test covers
- Health and safety law: HSWA 1974, CDM Regulations, RIDDOR
- Hazard identification and risk assessment on site
- Personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protection
- Manual handling and ergonomic injury prevention
- Working at height: ladders, scaffolds, fall protection
- Emergency procedures, fire safety, and first aid basics
Frequently asked
What is the pass mark for the CSCS HS&E test?
You must score at least 45 out of 50 (90%) on the operative test. Manager and specialist tests have similar high thresholds because the cards are a safety credential, not a knowledge ranking.
How long is the CSCS test pass valid?
Your test pass is valid for 2 years and is used to apply for a CSCS card, which itself has a separate validity period (typically 5 years). You will need to retake the test when applying for a new card.
Where can I book the CSCS test?
Book through citb.co.uk or directly via Pearson Professional Centres. The test is delivered at Pearson VUE centres across the UK.
