About the UK Driving Theory Test

The Driving Theory Test, administered by the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), is required before you can book a practical driving test in Great Britain. The theory test has two parts taken in one sitting: a multiple-choice section based on the Highway Code, and a hazard perception section using video clips.

This reviewer covers the multiple-choice portion - the Highway Code rules, road signs, vehicle handling, motorway driving, and incident response that DVSA sources its questions from. The official Highway Code is published free online by GOV.UK and remains the authoritative source as it is updated.

What this practice test covers

  • The Highway Code: rules for drivers, riders, pedestrians, cyclists
  • Road signs and markings (warning, regulatory, information)
  • Speed limits, motorway driving, and lane discipline
  • Safe driving: stopping distance, weather, night driving
  • Incident response: what to do at a collision, first aid basics
  • Vehicle loading, defects, and security

Frequently asked

What is the pass mark for the Theory Test?

You need at least 43 of 50 multiple-choice questions correct (86%) AND at least 44 of 75 on the hazard perception section. You must pass both parts in the same sitting.

Where do I take the DVSA Theory Test?

At a DVSA-approved theory test centre. Booking is done through GOV.UK. Bring your provisional licence; you cannot take the test without it.

How long is the theory test pass valid?

Two years. If you don't pass the practical driving test within two years of passing the theory, your theory pass expires and you must retake it.
