About the NSW Driver Knowledge Test

The Driver Knowledge Test (DKT) is the first step toward a NSW driver licence. Run by Transport for NSW (Service NSW), passing the DKT earns you a Learner Licence - a Class C learner permit that lets you drive a car under supervision while you log the practical hours needed for your provisional P1 licence.

DKT questions are sourced from the NSW Road Users' Handbook and cover road signs and markings, road law, safe driving behaviour, speed limits, and licensing rules. The test is taken on a touch-screen terminal at any Service NSW centre that offers it.

What this practice test covers

  • Road signs, markings, and traffic signals
  • Speed limits and their environments (school zones, residential, motorway)
  • Right-of-way and intersection rules in NSW
  • Drink-driving, drug-driving, and demerit points
  • Mobile phone, seatbelt, and child-restraint laws
  • Learner licence conditions and the Graduated Licensing Scheme
