About the K53 Learner's Licence Test (South Africa)

The K53 learner's licence test is the written exam every new driver in South Africa must pass before training for the practical driving test. It is taken at a Driving Licence Testing Centre (DLTC) and is based on the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996 and the official K53 learner's manual. The test for a light motor vehicle (code B) has 64 questions split into three sections: the controls of the vehicle, road signs and signals and markings, and the rules of the road.

Each section has its own pass mark, and you must reach the pass mark in every section to pass overall, within 60 minutes. This reviewer is free, self-paced practice written from the K53 syllabus so you can drill the signs, controls, and rules until they are automatic.

What this practice test covers

  • Controls of the vehicle: pedals, handbrake, indicators, hooter, mirrors, and dashboard warnings
  • Road signs: control, command, prohibition, warning, guidance, and information signs
  • Road markings: solid and broken lines and what you may and may not cross
  • Rules of the road: speed limits, alcohol limits, following distance, and right of way
  • Four-way stops, traffic circles, level crossings, and emergency vehicles

Frequently asked

How many questions are on the K53 learner's test and what is the pass mark?

The light motor vehicle (code B) test has 64 questions: 8 on vehicle controls (pass mark 6 of 8), 28 on road signs, signals and markings (pass mark 23 of 28), and 28 on rules of the road (pass mark 22 of 28). You must reach the pass mark in every section, within 60 minutes.

What is the minimum age for a learner's licence in South Africa?

You can apply for a code B (light motor vehicle) learner's licence from age 17. Motorcycle codes start at 16, and heavier vehicle codes from 18. A learner's licence is valid for 24 months.

Are these K53 practice tests official?

No. These are independent practice questions written from the official K53 learner's manual and the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996. They are not affiliated with or endorsed by any DLTC or the Department of Transport.

What must I do once I have my learner's licence?

A learner driver may only drive when accompanied by a person who holds a valid licence for that class of vehicle, seated next to them. You then practise and book the practical K53 driving test before your learner's licence expires.
